Meet The Readers: Emma, Ashley, Matilda
A bootleg fashion psychologist, a recovering perfectionist, a pizza-obsessed strategist
On April 7, I asked Work Unseen readers to fill out a survey so I could get to know the crew better. A few people mentioned they wanted to meet other readers—which gave me an idea I couldn’t shake.
I followed up in the chat, asking folks to share their own publications. And the replies rolled in. Turns out, so many of you are writing, researching, and building thoughtful, creative projects.
That moment led me to start this small series: profiles of a few “power readers” of Work Unseen—people who show up consistently, reply, comment, and quietly shape the vibe here. If we can even call it a community yet. Maybe it’s still forming. Maybe it’s more like a shared space in progress.
Starting today (and continuing next week), I’m sharing three readers I interviewed and illustrated as hand-drawn trading cards. You’ll see them here in the newsletter and in Notes. If I were still active on Instagram, I’d probably post them there too.
Each one is hand-lettered, collaged, and detailed in Procreate—a hobby I picked up while watching late ’70s movies. (currently Wise Blood, 1979). I’m envisioning Meet the Readers series as trading cards, think: baseball cards with zero stats.
This project is about meeting the people behind the subscriber numbers—living, breathing, creating, becoming. The kind of people you want to sit next to, write to, learn from.
If you like this series, let me know—I’d love to keep going and feature more of you in future rounds.

This is such a cool idea ❤️
What cool readers you have! I'm also ruminating on Matilda's big question about social platforms. Substacks like Work Unseen remind me of the positive power of social.
